Mrs. Ghulam Zahara Jahangir

Mrs. Ghulam Zahara Jahangir is a Plant Scientist at Centre for applied Molecular Biology (CAMB), University of the Punjab Lahore as “Research Officer” since 2008. She has done M.Sc. from Lahore College for Women University Lahore and M.Phil from GC University Lahore. Now she is doing Ph.D in the area of plant sciences. She has been working on different research projects in the areas of Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry. She has worked for development of improved varieties of Sugarcane (SCMV resistant) using siRNA technique in the project named as Disease Resistance Through siRNA Gene Silencing in Sugarcane. She has established the anti-mutagenic potential of spice plants (Piper nigrum, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Nigella sativa, Syzygium aromaticum, Ptychotisajowan, and Cuminum cyminum) against mutagenic effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and mouthwashes on human cheek cells. She has worked on isolation, purification, identification, and characterization of phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSBs). And now working to evaluate the positive impact of selected bacterial strains in natural agricultural filed conditions and also trying to find antifungal effectiveness of different bacterial strains (PSBs) that have been characterized as highly potential bio-fertilizers. She is also working to produce potato verities with superior characteristics for abiotic stress tolerance. She has been awarded with two research grants with titles as “Study on the anti-mutagenic/ DNA protecting potential of food plant extracts” and “Application of phosphate solubilizing bacteria for improved potato crop yield: a step towards the development of CAMB biofertilizer”. She has also submitted several projects to different funding agencies. Her areas of expertise include Gene cloning and expression study, plant transformation and DNA studies. Besides research activities she has been engaged for teaching Plant Molecular Biology, Crime Scene Management, Law and Forensic Sciences to M.Phil classes of CAMB. She has ten publications in the peer reviewed journals.
