Associate Professor
Dr. Mahjabeen Saleem

Dr. Mahjabeen Saleem joined the Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of the Punjab in 2002. Up to now three students have completed their Ph.D Degree under her guidance and a number of Ph.D students are pursuing their research for their Ph.D degree program. Research area includes the identification of protein and DNA biomarkers in cancer screening and their use in therapeutic discoveries. Cancer serum protein profiling coupled with immunological confirmation serve as candidates for cancer biomarkers, finding new therapeutic targets and improving the survival rates of cancer patients. To antagonize the angiogenic effects in different types of cancer with genetically engineered fusokines formed by the fusion of cytokines. Currently large scale industrial applications of enzymes are gaining increased attention due to their specific nature of activity, better and cheaper production, desirable results and the environment friendly nature. Harsh industrial process conditions are still challenging for the practical use of such enzymes. Presently the research focuses on the characterization of industrially important thermally stable microbial enzymes, their overproduction and improvement through genetic manipulation as well as the applications of these enzymes in food, textile, paper and pulp industries. Characterization of thermophilic and extreme thermophilic bacterial species and their importance in bioremediation of various industrial wastes is being studied. Research is going on the identification, characterization and cloning of antifungal proteins from different plants and their antifungal and therapeutic activity against pathogens and their use in different industries. She has arranged a number of scientific workshops, seminars and conferences. She has published a number of research articles in national and international repute journals.
