Department of Urdu Encyclopaedia of Islam

The idea of compiling a comprehensive and authentic Encyclopaedia of Islam in Urdu can be traced from 1938, when the first edition of English Encyclopaedia (Leiden) of Islam was completed and it was felt that almost every important language of the world possesses an orderable work of this nature except Urdu. Scholars like Prof. Dr. Maulvi Muhammad Shafi and Dr. Syed Muhammad Abdullah from University Oriental College Punjab University, proposed that the Punjab University should take the project in hand.
After long activities, the Department of Urdu Encyclopaedia of Islam was established in 1950. The first phase of the project was completed in 1992, which is a great literary achievement of the University of the Punjab. It is an endeavor to produce a resource book of authentic nature on Islamic and Pakistani topics in our own language. It consists of 24 Volumes (26 parts) covering 9973 more topics on Islam and Islamic World. The production of a complete Encyclopaedia of Islam in our national language Urdu is not only a matter of pride for the Punjab University but for the country as a whole also. Beside this, the Department has completed Shorter Urdu Encyclopaedia in one Volume and the Department has produced a complete Volume on Searat-ul-Nabi, entitled "Searat-e-Khair-ul-Anam" and the Department has completed its translation in Arabic also. Now the Department is compiling supplements of the main text and first two Volumes have been completed.
