College of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences

In 1950 the Department of Statistics was established in the University of the Punjab. In the same year, in addition to a post-graduate Diploma course, a two-year Master's degree program in Statistics was started. In 1952 the department was upgraded to the status of an Institute. Since its inception the Institute has been engaged in individual and collective research in the field of Theoretical and Applied Statistics. In 2000, the Institute has started a regular full time Ph.D. program. In 2003, institute established a centre “Operation Research Centre”. In 2004, the institute, in addition to the regular Ph.D program, started “M.Phil Leading towards Ph.D” program and M.Sc in Biostatistics. Moreover, the institute is going to start M.Sc in Actuarial Science from the academic year 2005. In order to promote the research activities and to expose the research process to the young statisticians, a research journal “Pakistan Journal of Statistics and Operation Research” will be published from the institute biannually from the year 2005, the first issue of the research journal in on the way. Statistical tools are the unavoidable tools for any research activity, in order to provide the consultancy to the researchers, a statistical consultancy centre has been established which will start its work from this year.
Over the past years, the Institute of Statistics has had the privilege of producing many eminent statisticians. The graduates of this Institute hold positions of eminence in Research Organizations, Education, and Industries as well as in administration, at home and abroad.

Library

The College has its own library to cater the needs of students and faculty members. It currently contains a small but useful collection of over 8000 volumes on Biostatistics, Statistics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Computer Science, Operation Research, Actuarial Sciences, Management, Mathematics and other related fields. Some general books on Pakistan and Islam are also available.

The College has a spacious air-conditioned reading hall in the library with a sitting arrangement for around 75 students. Readers are encouraged to read the books along with the newspapers, research journals and periodicals.

The main library of the University is located at the Quaid-i-Azam Campus and is one of the largest libraries in the country. It has a valuable collection of books on a wide range of subjects. The total collection of the library has reached nearly 400,000 volumes which include over 20,000 manuscripts. Over 100 research journals in various disciplines are subscribed by the main library. The main library also has internet facilities available for 100 students at a time. Online facilities in the library are also available. This main library of the Punjab University is another big resource and is also available for the M.Sc Biostatistics students.

Library Rules & Regulations

Every reader in the College is required to abide by the library rules and regulations. The students are expected to cooperate with the library staff. The library remains open 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on every working day.

Computer Laboratory

The College of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences has its own modern computer laboratory equipped with more than 70 latest machines including over 40 P-IV computers. The computer lab is networked with the University-wide network to provide fast internet connectivity. This lab will be available to the students. Free Internet facility is also available to the student to keep in touch with upto-date knowledge. The Computer Lab. remains open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on every working day.

Class Rooms

All the classrooms are air-conditioned, spacious and well-lit to meet the requirements of the students. Some classrooms are also equipped with multimedia and overhead projector facilities.

Study and Recreational Tours

Study and recreational tours are regularly arranged for the students of the College. Study tours are arranged to hospitals, research organizations and pharmaceutical industries. Recreational tours include both short as well as long trips to scenic and historical tourism places of Pakistan .

Extra Curricular Activities

The College is known all over the campus for its active cultural life. Holding of debates, sports, dinners, welcome and farewell parties etc. is part of the extracurricular training program pursued in the College. We believe that such activities are necessary for the overall development of a healthy personality. Our students have won prizes in debates, essay writing competitions as well as in sports, including the National Games.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance

The College provides merit scholarship to the students with excellent score in each semester. Moreover, financial assistance is also provided to the students lacking in financial support. The financial assistance committee recommends the students for financial assistance.

Other facilities

The University runs a health centre with a wide range of facilities for out-door patients. The University provides these medical facilities to both resident and non-resident students as well as the employees and their families.

The University provides transport services to the students. In addition to half hourly shuttle service between the Quaid-i-Azam Campus and Allama Iqbal Campus, the University buses cover about 20 other routes in the city to provide the transport facility to its students throughout the day.

There is a Student Teacher Centre in Quaid-i-Azam Campus. Numerous students study tours, good-will mission tours from various other universities and colleges of Pakistan frequently visit the University. They are provided with boarding and transport facilities to create maximum good-will between the visiting students and students of the University. There are special halls for indoor games, public lectures, seminars and conferences of the Centre. It also includes 8 furnished guest rooms for academic visitors of the University. The Centre provides many amenities which students may need to day to day life. These include a modern shopping centre, public call offices and a spacious cafeteria. It also caters for receptions and various University and departmental functions. The Centre also provides Counseling and guidance services to students.

Other facilities include services of an in house bank, post office, photocopying services & PCO and sports facilities. A variety of sports facilities including playgrounds for cricket, hockey, football and athletics, a swimming pool for male students, squash courts are available. Indoor games facilities in the hostels are available at the Quaid-i-Azam Campus. Playground for various sports and a female swimming pool are provided near the Allama Iqbal Campus, Rowing Club provides recreational as well as competitive rowing facilities at the canal of the Quaid-i-Azam Campus as well as the River Ravi, in the north of the city. The sports facilities for male and female students are managed by the respective sports offices.
