PU VC laments Muslims’ absence in modern sciences

LAHORE: (Tuesday, March 05, 2013): Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has said that Muslims made developments in various subjects but now their absence in modern sciences is regrettable and their contribution to creation of new knowledge was zero. He was addressing the inaugural session of three-day 14th All Pakistan Geographical Conference with the theme of “Geography: Hazards and Disaster Risk Management” organized by PU Department of Geography. The conference was presided over by internationally acknowledged expert of Geography Prof Dr Mariam K Elahi. Chairman Department of Geography Prof Dr Abdul Ghaffar, President Dr Jamil Hussain Kazmi, participants from various parts of country, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion. Dr Mujahid Kamran said that once Muslim scholars ruled the subject Geography. Lauding the services of Dr Mariam K Elahi, he said that she was a wonderful lady who did her PhD in 1952. Dr Mariam K Elahi said that the area of the subject of Geography was expanding and its importance of was also increasing. She stressed that research work should start and college level in the subject and student should be sent for field work. She said that we should utilize our natural resources for betterment of the country. Dr Abdul Ghaffar said that the title of today’s conference had strong relationship with Geography. He said that the losses caused by national disasters could be reduced by using modern techniques.
