No lack of resources in Pakistan: PU VC


LAHORE: (Saturday, August 06, 2016): Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has said that there is no lack of resources and talent in Pakistan and called upon the leadership to allocate at least 4 percent of GDP to education sector for the country’s development. He was addressing inter-university English speech competition for the students of Lahore based public/private universities on Saturday at Al-Raazi Hall. The event was organized by Punjab University Directorate of Students Affairs in collaboration with Higher Education Department, Government of Punjab in connections with the celebrations of Independence Day. Punjab University Registrar Prof Dr Liaqat Ali, Resident Officer-I Prof Dr Sajid Rashid Ahmad, Director Center for Undergraduate Studies Prof Dr Amir Ijaz, Deputy Director Students Affairs Zubair Akram and students from various universities were present on the occasion.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr Mujahid Kamran said that Pakistan had the population of 180 to 200 million people while it stood 40th, 155th and 184th in terms of GDP, Per Capita Income and education respectively in the world. He said that the average spending of the world on education was 5 percent of GDP while Pakistan allocated 2 percent and consumed around 1.7 percent. He said that Operation Zarb-e-Azb had defeated terrorists and General Raheel Sharif had been declared top general in the world, which was a great success. He said that the young generation was not aware of international conspiracies and advised the debaters to search different topics revealing international intrigues which he mentioned on the spot for their awareness. In the speech competition, Lahore College for Women’s University’s Mehtab Alvi, Punjab University’s Shahan Zafar and Government College University’s Mohiba Ahmed got first, second and third positions respectively while Hamza Abbas of University of Engineering and Technology received consolation award. Later, PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran distributed cash prizes among winners.
