Three Days Training Workshop on Faculty Development on Start-ups and How to Manage Business Incubation Centers by improving Industry-Academia-Government-Society Linkage


A three days faculty & staff development workshop was conducted from 1st - 3rd November at Human Resource Development Center (HRDC) – Institute of Administrative Sciences (IAS) University of the Punjab in collaboration with Pakistan Institute of Entrepreneurship (PIE). The agenda under discussion was to understand entrepreneurship and to manage business incubation centers at university, teach and promote entrepreneurship and to improve the strength of the chain among academia, industry, government and society. The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Tahir Mahmood Chaudhry – President & CEO – Pakistan Institute of Entrepreneurship (PIE). Mr. Tahir Ch. was formally welcomed by Prof. Dr. Nasira Jabeen – Dean Faculty of Economics & Management Sciences (FEMS) & Institute of Administrative Sciences (IAS) through telephonic means due to her prior official commitments at Islamabad. Mr. Muhammad Zahid – senior faculty member at IAS presented a welcome note to the speaker and all the participants. The workshop began with the beautiful recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Mr. Hafiz Junaid- student of BS (4years) in Management at IAS.
Significance and strength of industry-academia chain was discussed keeping in view the best practices and good governance of the institutions that ultimately build and shape societies. Faculty and staff members from Institute of Administrative Sciences (IAS), Institute of Business & Information Technology (IBIT), Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Office of Research, Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC), Career Counseling & Placement Center (CCPC), College of Earth & Environmental Sciences (CEES), Hailey College of Commerce (HCC), PU Jhelum Campus, Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT), Economics department and MSHRM and PhD students of IAS participated at the workshop.
Challenges and opportunities for establishing linkages between university and corporate sector were discussed with add on of local case studies highlighting the Turn-around Management. The discussion emphasized on inevitable role of Executive Development Centers at universities, both for the uplift of education standards and practices at corporate sector. Both components of society need to work hand-in hand for growth of the country. A detailed overview of such centers and its functions were discussed.
Mr. Tahir placed great importance to the active national and international collaboration of Universities with Professional Bodies for larger and smoother function of graduate placements, career advisory and healthy relations among alumni, innovation & research, technology incubation, and commercialization of academic projects. Special emphasis in this regard has to be laid on the conscious effort of image presentation along with image building of the institutes. Minute details about internships, learning at internships and reasons of failure of start-ups and business were also deliberated. The workshop included a full-fledged session on running one's own consultancy. A handful of tips and advises giving better exposures were shared. The three days discussions were wrapped around the essence of Entrepreneurial mindset that motivated, geared up and most importantly equipped the participants with “How To's” of daily and importance tasks.
At the closing ceremony on Nov 3rd 2017, Mr. Muhammad Zahid summed up the agenda under discussion and presented a vote of thanks to the facilitator. In his talk, Mr. Zahid shared that universities are the ideal place for cross-fertilization of ideas and to channelize human talent. He appreciated the committed and dedicated efforts of Mr. Tahir Chaudhry to enhance public-private partnership. As a token of respect and appreciation, Mr. Muhammad Zahid presented institutional souvenir, a book and bouquet of flowers to Mr. Tahir Chaudhry. The ceremony ended with certification distribution to the organizing committee and to the participants. A guest lecture with Mr. Tahir Ch. was also organized with the evening program students at IAS. Executives in the evening program highly appreciated the interaction with the practitioner and engaged in the participative discussion.
Upon the arrival of Prof. Dr. Nasira Jabeen an official breakfast was organized with Mr. Tahir Ch. where he thanked Dr. Jabeen for the opportunity provided from the platform of HRDC, IAS University of the Punjab and shared his experience. A highly productive meeting was held to address concerns in this regard with steps up. Areas for further collaboration were also discussed.
HRDC at IAS plans to organize more of such learning sessions for the benefit of academia, industry/government & society. The interaction was widely appreciated by the participants, faculty & students.
