Literature must highlight, resolve social problems: Dr Nizam


LAHORE: (Saturday, May 5, 2018): Punjab Higher Education Commission Chairman Prof Dr Nizamuddin has said that literature is the name of creativity and our literature must highlight and help resolve problems being faced by Pakistani society. He was addressing the first national conference on “counter balancing politics and aesthetics in Pakistani literature” organized by PU Department of English Language and Literature, Punjab Higher Education Commission and Punjab Information and Culture Department at its auditorium here on Saturday. PU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Nasira Jabeen, Punjab Information and Culture Department Additional Secretary and Executive Director Punjab Council of Arts Saman Rai, Department of English Language and Literature Chairperson Dr Amra Raza, renowned artists, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion.

Addressing the inaugural session, Dr Nizammudin said that our research must be connected with our society and not for the sake of publication in research journals to earn academic credits. He said that our researchers must contribute to development of policies and they must come forward to resolve issues of our society. He said that it was a problem in social sciences that our research was not connected with our society and such research became meaningless. He advised the researchers to relate our ground realities in their research work and find solutions. He said that unfortunately we were poor in Urdu language and worse in English language. He said that language labs must be established to resolve language related issues. He said that in Iran, latest books in all the fields were being translated in Persian language and we must also have high standard books in Urdu language. He said that we were facing problems in teaching, research, language and literature. He said that there was need to encourage creative activities and PHEC would support such events and conferences. PU VC Dr Nasira Jabeen said that the topic of the counter balancing politics and aesthetics in literature was an emerging issue not only locally but globally. She said that academic debates must be initiated to discuss such issues as it was very important to balance between the both. Ms Saman Rai said that counter balancing was a force we were doing it in everyday life. She said that we must give priority to our culture and must study literature. Dr Amra Raza said that department had organized 59 events including seminars, talks, training programs etc. She said that as many as 23 presenters would present their research work covering various aspects of the topic in the conference. She said that the moot had provided an excellent opportunity to interact with each other and share experiences.
