PU, PRCS to develop urban forests


LAHORE: (Thursday, November 14, 2019): Punjab University Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Pakistan Red Crescent Society have signed an agreement to launch joint efforts for environment protection and develop urban forests. The MoU signing ceremony was organized at Vice Chancellor's office in which PU VC Prof Niaz Ahmad, PRCS Chairman Dr Saeed Elahi, Director Institute of Agricultural Sciences Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Haider and Director External Linkages Dr Sobia Khurram were present. As per agreement, both the institutions would work to create awareness regarding sensible and sustainable use of natural resources. PU and PRCS would carry out cooperative activities related to environmental issues including climate change effects on agriculture, human and environmental health and air quality. PU and PRCS would also work for reporting and reducing greenhouse gases and share the design and implementation of policies and programs that have lowered greenhouse gas emissions and promoted low carbon development. Both the parties would promote renewable energy and emission reductions from deforestation and forest degradation. PU VC Prof Niaz Ahmad said that we need to enforce climate emergency if we wanted to give healthy and livable environment to next generations. He said that the recent environment indicators were alarming and there was urgent need to cope with environmental challenges. Otherwise our planet will not be able to host us, he added.
