The department of Botany organized an international seminar titled Integrated approaches to wheat breeding to mitigate production risk by Dr. Harpinder Singh Randhawa from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. A large number of students, researchers and faculty members were present. Dr. Harpinder highlighted the problems in breeding new varieties of wheat and told that a new variety with good characteristics can be commercialized in a period of 12-13 years because such varieties are accepted worldwide as compared to GMO varieties. He presented his work on how good varieties with greater straw strength, bigger grain size and larger protein and gluten content can be prepared also being resistant against smut and other fungal diseases as well as insect diseases. He also highlighted the difference in agricultural practices of Canada and Pakistan, India in accepting new technologies and advancements. In the end a question answer session was held. Professor. Dr. Firdaus-e-Bareen, Chairperson of the Dept, appreciated Dr. Harpinder Singh for coming over and delivering his talk.
