Seed Centre

In recent years interest has developed in many countries for the induction of potato tubers under in vitro conditions. Especially in the potato, contamination by a pathogen can severely reduce the total yield of the crop. In order to solve this problem, tremendous efforts have been put into conventional seed potato production schemes. Among several solutions, one of the most utilized and routine procedure is to raise virus free plants in vitro through shoot merited propagation. At present the mass production of pathogen free potato microtubers is regarded as one of the most promising methodologies.
Punjab University is the first University of the country to exploit the PTC technique for the commercial production of disease free potato seed.
