To manage all the activities of the overall I.T. Infrastructure like Network Development, expansion and maintenance,
providing maintenance/troubleshooting services (Network, Hardware and software) to all departments, Software Development,
Database management & Website Development,online Announcement of Examination Results,24-hour Internet facility, the
University of the Punjab has full-fledged service department in Quaid-i-Azam Campus, namely the Information Technology
Centre. It is working for the growth and smooth progress for the evolution of new I.T. Developments.
In the last four years, University of the Punjab has spent a large amount to develop the
IT Infrastructure and serve the students in the best and latest possible ways. At the moment, University has 9 MB bandwidth for students, faculty and Researchers which is the largest bandwidth amongst any Public Sector University in Pakistan.The University of the Punjab has the largest
Fiber Optic Cables Local Area Network involving more than 35 KM single and multimode fiber optic cable as backbone and more
than 2,000 nodes, which connects all existing departments and hostels with each other.
University Main Server (Quaid-e-Azam Campus) is equipped with the latest hardware that includes 2500/ 3600 Series Cisco
Routers, Switch blade, high-end layer 3/2 manageable and unmanageable switches, Cisco Pix Firewall 525, Synchronous Digital
Hierarchy (SDH equipment) through which the server room is linked with Garden Town Exchange via Fiber Optic Cable, Access
Server 5350, proxy server, Traffic Monitoring Server, Web Server, Data Server, Backup Server, Radius Server, FTP server and a
DNS Server with the latest specifications.
Wireless connectivity between University server room (IT Centre building new campus) and
Institute of Administrative Sciences in Quaid-i-Azam campus has been completed and Ph.D students are enjoying the internet
facility in IAS department.
In old campus (Allama Iqbal Campus), IT Centre has established LAN through Fiber Optic
Cables as backbone among different departments including PUCIT, College of Art and Design and College of Pharmacy. IT Centre
also has connected Hailey College of Banking and Finance to College of Pharmacy and Oriental College to College of Pharmacy
through wireless network. IT Centre is providing internet facility to all these departments through 2 MB DSL Circuit and 1 MB
satellite downlink.
The Database section of Information Technology Centre is actively participating in
development of software systems of the University of the Punjab.
The following software systems were implemented and are being maintained by the I.T. Centre.
1. Complaint Management System (Ticketing System) (Implemented)
2. SIMS (Student Information Management System) Desktop Based in IQTM (Implemented)
3. HRMS (Human Resource Management System) (Implemented)
4. HMS (Hostel Management System) (Implemented in Hall Council)
5. MLIMS (Multilingual library information management system) (Implemented)
6. HCMS (Health Centre Management System) [In Implementation phase]
Web Section has been involved in all stages of the development of web sites - right from planning, design, quality control,
launching to online promotion and monitoring.
A fully dynamic website for the University is currently online. Web Section is updating exam results, merit lists,
entry test results, date sheets, admission notices, course outlines, faculty data, lectures, publications, university press
releases and jobs notices provided by different departments.
All departments in the University can refer their hardware for troubleshooting or repairs
to the Hardware Lab. From computers and peripherals such as Monitors, CPUs, Printers and CD-drives to other networking
equipment like Media Converters, Switches and UPSs, the Hardware Section specializes in
Repairing them all.
In Future, Dial-up facility to be hosted by I.T. Centre will be arranged for students, faculty members and administrative
staff for research work & making arrangements for video conferencing with collaboration of HEC Pakistan. This will enable
University to establish connectivity to world wide Universities regarding delivering lectures/Conferences/Symposiums etc.
along with HCMS (Health Centre Management) for Health Centre.
