Over 450 students view solar eclipse at Punjab University


LAHORE : (Friday, January 15, 2010): Punjab University installed two high powered telescopes for the students to view solar eclipse at the Department of Space Science and jogging track ground. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran visited both the places and observed solar eclipse along with the students. He said this activity would help promote awareness about the space science and astronomy among students. He said for the first time such a large number of students have gathered to sight the solar eclipse. Khawarzmi Society and Centre for Solid State Physics installed two telescopes and about 300 students sighted the eclipse while at Department of Space Science, 150 students took interest in sighting the view.

Khawarzmi Society Secretary Dr Sabih Anwar said the telescope installed at the ground was the second largest telescope in Pakistan with 14” diameter mirror. He said the solar eclipse continued from 11:35am to 2:30pm and was viewed from 30 to 35 percent in Pakistan .

Punjab University was the only place where three telescopes were installed to observe the solar eclipse.
