Introduction:
The course on Modern Fiction enables the student to grasp different techniques and understand varied literary movements used in the art of novel writing. Joyce and Woolf used the technique of stream-of-consciousness while Conrad highlights modes of Imperialism in Heart of Darkness. The diversity of themes explored in the novels of this course will motivate the students to think critically.
Objectives:
The students are to examine different aspects of modern novel considering style, point-of-view, tone, structure, and the historical background which contribute to the development of the genre. The students will be acquainted with the changing social and literary trends of 20th Century in the backdrop of world wars and scientific revolution.
Contents:
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf.
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
by James Joyce
Outcome:
The course emphasizes close reading of the selected texts. The students are supposed to contribute to the class discussion, do presentations along written assignments.
