INTRODUCTION:
This course introduces students to some of the seminal ideas in the field of literary criticism through the works of Aristotle, Sir Philip Sidney and T.S. Eliot. Through these critics who are separated by ages, a picture with a broad brush is painted which reveals the basic contours of traditional literary critical discourse.
OBJECTIVES AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:
To familiarize students with the earliest origins of western literary criticism.
To acquaint them with the organic connection that exists between the society and literary critical debates.
To give students some critical tools to help them engage with a literary text in a deeper manner.
To enable students to evaluate the worth of a literary text with the help of certain critical parameters.
