Dr. Adeel Ahmad
Dr. Adeel Ahmad is a prominent Geospatial Researcher and Assistant Professor at the Institute of Geography, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. With over 14 years of experience in academia, research, and industry, he is widely recognized for his contributions to applying geospatial technologies to pressing environmental and urban challenges. His expertise lies in satellite image analysis, landscape monitoring, deep learning for Earth observation, and climate change assessment using remote sensing.
Dr. Adeel recently completed a prestigious postdoctoral fellowship at the Taylor Geospatial Institute (TGI), hosted by Washington University in St. Louis, USA (2023–2025). At TGI, he led cutting-edge research in AI-driven environmental monitoring and remote sensing, contributing to global initiatives such as the Fields of The World (FTW) — a state-of-the-art benchmark dataset of over 1.6 million agricultural field boundaries across 24 countries. He also co-authored the Best Paper Award-winning work Sat2Cap, presented at the CVPR EarthVision Workshop in 2024, as well as RANGE, which was accepted and published in the main track of the CVPR Conference in 2025.
He obtained his PhD in Geomatics from the University of the Punjab, focusing on forest resource assessment in Azad Jammu and Kashmir using optical remote sensing. He holds an MPhil in Geomatics and a BS in Geography, graduating as the University Gold Medalist. His academic journey is marked by excellence, scholarship awards, and innovative research.
Previously, Dr. Adeel served as Lecturer at Forman Christian College (FCCU), the University of the Punjab, and as a Visiting Lecturer at the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences (CEES). His teaching portfolio includes Geographical Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing, Cartography, and Spatial Environmental Modeling. At the University of the Punjab, he has also taken on key academic roles, including Student Advisor, Departmental Controller of Examinations, Departmental Career Counseling Focal Person, and Board of Studies Member.
In 2025, he coordinated the national Summer School “From Data to Decisions” — a two-week flagship training on cloud computing, geospatial AI, and climate impact modeling, attracting scholars from across Pakistan.
Dr. Adeel has authored or co-authored over 40 research publications, including in high-impact journals and conferences such as the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) Conference, Land Degradation & Development, Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, American Geophysical Union (AGU), Advances in Space Research, and Forests. His research outputs span multiple Geography domains, including urban heat island mapping, forest canopy height modeling. LULC-driven soil erosion assessment, Spatiotemporal dynamics of urban sprawl and climate impact modeling, and similar.
He has mentored several PhD, MPhil, and BS students, including international co-supervision at Washington University in St. Louis. His Google Earth Engine (GEE) applications for mangrove loss and soil erosion in Pakistan are widely used for environmental assessment and public awareness.
In industry, Dr. Adeel served as GIS Analyst at MM Pakistan, contributing to World Bank, ADB, UNICEF, and government-funded projects on irrigation, solid waste management, watershed modeling, and power infrastructure development.
He is a frequent invited speaker and trainer, having delivered technical talks and workshops on GeoAI, canopy height mapping, deep learning for EO, and humanitarian mapping at conferences and academic institutions in Pakistan and abroad, including AGU (USA), IGARSS, FCCU, and TGI Research Day.
