Migration to New Email Services (Google Apps) for University of the Punjab

            IT center has been providing E-mail services to all departments of the university & our email users are increasing rapidly. Currently the services are being provided through a US based hosting company (legacy mail server). A lot of problems like limited quota, wrong authentication, fragile connectivity and downtimes have been observed frequently. To resolve such issues, shifting towards Google Apps email services has been decided on advice of worthy Vice Chancellor. All the users of PU mail services will be able to get following additional features of the Google Apps Services:

· Large Email/Attachment Size

· More Secure

· Powerful Spam Blocking System

· More Storage Space (Approx. 7 GB)

· 99.9% Uptime           

· Other useful services besides email (Calendar, Docs, Chat etc)

· Easy-to-use Interface

· Customized look and feel using themes

            As administrative approval for this migration has been accorded by worthy Vice Chancellor, so individual users were informed through this email to facilitate seamless transition. Following are the main considerations for seamless transition in sequence:

a)   All accounts have been created on a single primary domain (pu.edu.pk), which involves removing subdomains part from email accounts wherever applicable.

For example, abc@math.pu.edu.pk (old account) has been changed to abc.math@pu.edu.pk (new account). Any account which is already on primary domain (pu.edu.pk) has not been changed, for example, abc@pu.edu.pk will remain as it is.

b)   To manage this switchover smoothly, all new accounts have been created and emails to all individual users have been sent to old Legacy email account on 21-06-2011. Old Legacy email account is not working anymore. Users will be able to access their emails through new Google Apps services.

c)   All the users are requested to start using new email accounts and communicate newly built accounts to correspondence circle.

 To access your new email account, you can login at www.google.com/a/pu.edu.pk using the provided username/password which was sent to your old Legacy email account on 21-06-2011.

Password: somepassword
