| Centre for Clinical Psychology
|
|
|
 Centre for Clinical Psychology was established by Professor Rafia Hassan, Chairperson Department of Applied Psychology, in 1984 in response to the need for an institution for the training of Clinical Psychologists by the then president of Pakistan. In the beginning, the Centre offered only Advanced Diploma in Clinical Psychology (ADCP) but since 1998, the Centre has added other programmes i.e., M.Phil, BS (Hons), MS, and Ph.D. The Centre is also successfully running a training and educational programme for children with special need.
The Centre’s high quality training, supervision, and research make it a distinguishing and highly esteemed institute in Pakistan for teaching, training and providing clinical services to the masses. This training prepares future clinical psychologists to serve in various fields such as Armed Forces, public and private-sector hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation, training centre, educational institutions, and NGOs. The students are rigorously trained in assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy, and conducting research.

Workshops on Psychology of Happiness, Death and Dying, Psychology and Spirituality and Therapeutic Uses of Mental Imagery
Centre for Clinical Psychology, University of the Punjab organized a workshop on January 19, 2007 by Dr. Anees Sheikh, a clinical psychologist from Marquette University, Milwake, Wisconsin, USA. He conducted workshops on the topics of ‘Psychology of Happiness’, ‘Death and Dying’, Psychology and Spirituality, and ‘Therapeutic Uses of Mental Imagery.’ The objective of these workshops was to enhance the knowledge of the participants regarding the therapeutic effects of imagery. The participants greatly benefited from the above mentioned workshops.
Training workshops on “Imagery in Clinical Practice”
Under Foreign Faculty Hiring Scheme Dr. Jan Taal, Clinical Psychologist from Germany came to the Centre for Clinical Psychology for two weeks in January 2008 and carried training workshops on “Imagery in Clinical Practice” for students and teachers of the Centre. The students of BS (Hons), M.Phil, ADCP, Ph.D. and all the faculty members attended these workshops. These workshops enhanced the understanding regarding the efficacy of imagery in clinical practice. The participants enjoyed and benefited from the rich experience that the workshop offered.
One Day Workshop on Neurolinguistic Programming
A workshop on Neurolinguistic Programming was conducted by Centre for Clinical Psychology, University of the Punjab. Lord Dr. Shaukat Nawaz Khan, Chairman British Pakistani Foundation in UK conducted this workshop for the Centre’s students. He also delivered two public lectures for students & Punjab University Teachers on topics: “Youth & Peer Pressure” and “Media & Public Awareness” from 2nd to 5th March, 2009 which was arranged by the Center for Clinical Psychology at undergraduate block of the University of the Punjab. The workshop helped to further the knowledge of the participants regarding the current trends in Neurolinguistic Programming. The public lecture also provided participants with an enlightening experience about a wide array of topics.
Workshop on Research Methods & Statistics
To strengthen the understanding of the research and statistics, Dr. Ashiq Ali Shah, an eminent professor of Psychology from Canada came to the Centre for Clinical Psychology under Foreign Faculty Hiring Scheme of HEC for two weeks in July, 2009 and carried out a series of workshops on “Research Methods & Statistics” for students and faculty of the Centre. Moreover, he also conducted a two-day workshop for professionals working in the field on the topic “How to Plan a Research.” The workshop helped in polishing the research and statistical concepts of the participants and provided practical exposure about how research is conducted and what kind of statistics should be employed in a specific context.
One day National Conference on “Gender Issues in 21st Century”
One day National conference on “Gender Issues in 21st Century” was organized by Centre for Clinical Psychology in 2006 in which many students as well as professional clinical psychologists from all over Pakistan participated and presented their research work. The conference highlighted the need to address the number of prevailing gender issues in Pakistan. Recommendations for legislations were forwarded to the government agencies.
Two-day International Conference on “Impact of Global Violence on Mental Health: A Challenge for Mental Health Professionals”
Centre for Clinical Psychology had organized Two days International Conference on “Impact of Global Violence on Mental Health: A Challenge for Mental Health Professionals” in 2006. A large number of students as well as professional clinical psychologists and psychologists from other countries and delegates from all over Pakistan participated and presented their research work. Recommendations based on research presentations and panel discussion, were then sent to different governmental sectors for consideration implementation.
Workshop on Post Disaster Psychological Management of Children
Department of Applied Psychology and Centre for Clinical Psychology, University of the Punjab, collaboratively held a 3-day workshop on April 22 – 24, 2012 on “Post Disaster Psychological Management of Children” which has been conducted by renowned clinical psychologists, Ms. Elin Mahle & Ms. Unni Marrie, from Europe. It aimed at producing master trainers who would subsequently provide training to professionals for psychological management of children who have witnessed traumatic condition such as floods, earthquakes, terror attacks etc. Mental health professionals from all over Pakistan and from abroad participated in the workshop. The students of MS, Ph.D. and faculty members of both departments also participated in the workshop.
On the concluding ceremony of the workshop the VC, while addressing the ceremony, stressed on the acquisition of knowledge to solve all the problems being faced by the country. He advised the participants to practice what they had learnt in order to serve the country. Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Kausar also addressed the ceremony and said that disaster affected psychologically nearly each and ever person of the community but children were mostly vulnerable to disaster suffering and it was manifested in for of psychological and behavioral symptoms. She said sometimes parents, teachers and other persons concerned underestimated not only the intensity but the extent of the stress reactions in children. She said that some of psychological effects on children after disaster included post traumatic stress symptoms, adjustment related disorder, depression, anxiety, fears of monsters or animals. She further added that early psychological intervention was recommended following disasters and counseling after disasters should be provided for fairly longer period, with different and shifting patterns and highlighting changing needs of different age groups. In the end, certificates were distributed among participants of the workshop and the resource persons were presented with the flowers and sovereigns.

The Centre has a well established in-house ‘psychological assessment and treatment centre’ which offers individual and group therapy for male and female adults, and children with different psychological problems such as psychotic disorders, mood disorders, eating disorders, sleep disorders, substance related disorders, sexual disorders, somatoform disorders, etc.
The Centre provides assessment facilities for intelligence testing; aptitude testing; psycho-diagnostic testing; neuropsychological testing; ability testing; and personality testing.
Psychological treatment is provided for diverse psychological problems including anxiety, fears and phobias, depression, eating disorders, obsessions and compulsions, psychosexual disorders and dysfunctions, sleep problems, mood disorder, psychotic disorders, learning & speech problems, low self confidence and self-esteem, anger related problems, career issues, and academic problems
The Centre for Clinical Psychology is providing speech assessment and treatment services in the form of individual and group therapy for adults and children with different speech problems such as stammering / stuttering, articulation, and voice disorders.
The Centre also runs a rehabilitation program for the patients with psychiatric disorders at Fountain House and Dar-ul-Sakoon, Punjab Social Welfare Department. Individual, group and family therapeutic sessions are conducted with the patients and their family members by the trainees of the Centre under the supervision of trained clinical psychologists. These programs aim at psycho-social rehabilitation of the patients. Furthermore, it aims at creating awareness among masses and destigmatizing mental health problems.
A self-supporting program for children with special needs offers both psychological assessment and intervention program. Individual, group and family sessions are part of the training. This program is open for children ranging in age 5-18 years with learning disabilities, behavior problems, autism, mental retardation and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
At Centre for Clinical Psychology, the services of qualified faculty members and consultants are extended to benefit individuals and institutions. The Centre offers psychological services to referrals from general physicians, psychiatric institutions, schools and the walk-in clients. Service charges are subsidized & special consideration is given to students and deserving cases from the community.
Centre for Clinical Psychology is equipped with a library with more than five thousand books, and journals related to the field of Clinical Psychology. The Centre’s library regularly updates books and other reading material. In addition, students of the Centre for Clinical Psychology can also utilize the facilities of the main library of University of the Punjab.
The testing laboratory is equipped with latest psychological assessment tools for the assessment of intelligence; ability; aptitude; personality; neuropsychological functioning, and psycho-diagnosis for both children and adults.
The experimental laboratory is equipped with apparatus for carrying out experiments on human mental processes i.e., perception, memory, cognition and learning. It has sufficient capacity and proper seating arrangement for 20 students. Each student is given opportunity to perform experiments independently.
There are four computer labs for the students of ADCP, BS (Hons), MS, and Ph.D. There are 53 computers for students to provide them facility for word processing, data analysis and to use databases through Punjab University digital library and those available on the internet.
