Sociology is the scientific study of the development, structure, and function of human society. Sociologists examine the ways in which social structures and institutions, such as class, family, community, and power influence society. The subject deals with social problems like crime with special societal expertise. The University of the Punjab first offered courses in Sociology in 1955. The department offers M.A. (Morning and Afternoon) and Master in Population Sciences (Evening) programs.
A Doctoral program in Sociology has also been started recently. Throughout its existence the Department of Sociology at Punjab University has been a major center of research and graduate training in Sociology. Its graduates can be found at senior academic levels throughout Pakistan and around the world. Sociology graduates work in academic institutions, public administration, social services, criminal justice systems, and various public and private agencies.
