Resident Office was established in 1962 to look after the general administration of the Campus of Punjab University. Main task/duties assigned to this office were to take care of Transport, Housing, University land, Shops/Kiosk and Security services of entire University. The office is headed by Resident Officer, who is appointed from either teaching staff or administrative staff holding BS-20.
With the passage of time and increase in student/faculty strength as well as shifting of some departments from old campus to new campus, workload of Resident Office increased manifold. Therefore, the Resident office was bifurcated into two offices in 1997 i.e. Resident Officer-I & Resident officer-II. University security, shops/kiosk, housing and transport remained under R.O-I.
The Transport wing of Punjab University has one of the biggest transport fleet in public sector universities of Pakistan. There are around 60 buses, coaster and vans. Two new buses have been added this year. The transport wing is headed by a Senior Transport officer who is responsible for the smooth and swift operation of buses. These buses provide pick and drop facilities to the faculty, students and employees from every nook and corner of Lahore as well as also caters for their out of city study, excursion and recreational tours on very nominal rates.
The Residential colony of Punjab University has more than 500 houses of different categories, which includes spacious houses for faculty members as well as administrative staff of the University. The houses are allocated on seniority basis by House Allotment Committee. Punjab University also has furnished rooms/suites for bachelor male and female teachers that are also allocated on seniority basis. Handing/taking of these houses is the responsibility of Estate Officer working under R.O-I office.
There are more than 100 shops including canteens/cafeterias located in the hostel area and residential colony which are catering the needs of faculty, students and employees. These shops/canteens are providing well hygienic food and different commodities of daily use at prevailing market prices. These shops are allocated to shopkeepers after transparent tendering process.
There are parking stands at different departments/institutes wherein students, employees and visitors park their car/bikes during the university working hours. These parking lots are leased out to the contractor through transparent tendering process. The parking facility is available to the faculty/students and employees at no charges and very nominal fee to outside guests/visitors.
The Sir Syed Campus of Punjab University located at beautiful hilly location in the vicinity of Khanaspur village 30 km ahead of Murree is also looked after by R.O-I office. The campus is established for research/practical work for various students/faculty of the Punjab University. The Campus has 09 suites, 2 side rooms, 6 barracks (for male students) 3 barracks (for female students) and a seminar room (for conferences, seminars and meetings).
To ensure safe and secure environment for the students/faculty to carry out their studies/research, an elaborate security set up headed by Chief Security Officer is established at Punjab University. They carry out regular patrol of buildings and University premises via foot/mounted (motorcycle and vehicles). E-tag system for vehicles entering University premises and CCTV cameras at vantage points have been installed to ensure secure environments for students/faculty/employees.
