Dr. Imran Sajid specializes in the field of Industrial and Pharmaceutical Microbiology, with research interests encompassing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), drug discovery and the development of biotechnology-based products. His research focuses on the discovery of novel antibiotics from Streptomyces and rare actinobacteria, microbial fermentation and metabolomics, whole-genome sequencing and genome mining of antibiotic-producing microorganisms, and genomic surveillance of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) bacterial pathogens. His laboratory also investigates the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance through the food chain and develops sustainable, locally relevant strategies to combat AMR using One Health and biotechnology approaches.
Prof. Sajid has received advanced research training through several prestigious international fellowships, including the US Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Center for Pharmaceutical Research and Innovation, University of Kentucky, USA, the Erasmus Mundus Experts4Asia Program at the University of Turku, Finland; the HEC International Research Support Initiative Program (IRSIP) at Georg August University of Göttingen, Germany; and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology funded natural medicine training at Institute of Materia Medica (IMM) Beijing, China.  He was also recognized by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) with the ASMCUE International Microbiology Educator Award in 2015. Besides Dr. Sajid has undergone through extensive academic and student’s supervision related trainings including HEC’s Master trainer, MT-FPDP program at LID-HEC Islamabad, the Advanced Faculty Development Program at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand, NAHE-British Council funded Advanced PhD supervisor Capacity Building Program at University of Coventry, UK. Dr. Imran Sajid has successfully led several nationally and internationally funded research projects, including major grant as PI through HEC-NRPU projects, an international collaborative research grant as CO-PI funded by Chinese academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and several contemporary grants from University of the Punjab research projects. Currently he has h-index 25, i-10 index 43 and is actively supervising undergraduate, master's, and PhD research, currently 10 PhD, and 45 master’s students and a large number of undergraduates have completed their research under his supervision, he is committed to advancing microbiological research, innovation, and biotechnology for improved human health and sustainable development.
