Introduction

The Department of Mathematics at the University of the Punjab is one of the universitys oldest academic units, founded in 1921. Over the years, it has produced numerous distinguished graduates, many of whom have gained prominence in Mathematics.

In December 2024, under the visionary leadership of Professor Dr. Muhammad Akram, the Department of Mathematics was elevated into the Institute of Mathematics, now led by its first Director, Professor Dr. Ghazala Akram, to continue its legacy of growth and excellence.

The Punjab University Mathematics Alumni (PUMA) is a remarkable community that exemplifies the transformative power of education. Its members, equipped with the analytical tools and critical thinking skills fostered in the department, have gone on to shape industries, solve complex problems, and contribute to a global network of knowledge and innovation. PUMA reflects the human capacity for connection and progress, turning academic foundations into real-world impact.

The establishment of PUMA is rooted in the following principles and objectives:

  • Building Bridges Across Time and Space: To enable alumni to remain engaged with the Department, creating a network that transcends geographical and generational boundaries, and supports a continuous exchange of ideas and experiences.
  • Advancing Educational Excellence: To align with the University’s mission of delivering high-quality education to Pakistan’s youth, utilizing the alumni network as a critical resource in achieving this transformative goal.
  • Sustaining Engagement with the Alma Mater: To encourage alumni to take an active interest in the Department’s growth and development, recognizing that a university’s success is a shared endeavor that benefits all who are part of its story.
  • Creating a Brain Bank for Collective Advancement: To develop a “Brain Bank” of alumni professionals, transforming their accumulated knowledge and skills into a resource that can benefit the University, its students, and the broader community.
  • Promoting Equity in Education: To establish scholarship programs that enable talented but underprivileged students to pursue their education, thus ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of intellectual potential.
