Dr. Sonia Omer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work, University of the Punjab, Lahore, where she has been serving since 2008. With more than 23 years of teaching, research, and academic leadership experience, she has taught and supervised students at the BS, MS/MPhil, and PhD levels. Dr. Omer is an accomplished researcher with numerous publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals, including journals recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. She has presented her research at prestigious international conferences and academic forums in the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, Kenya, and other countries, establishing a strong international academic profile. She has also delivered invited lectures and participated in collaborative academic activities with renowned universities in the United States and the United Kingdom. She is an active PhD, MS/MPhil, and BS research supervisor and has served on various departmental, faculty, and university-level academic and administrative committees.
Dr. Omer is also the Director of the Sughra Begum Centre for Education Policy and Development at the University of the Punjab, where she leads initiatives in faculty development, education policy, and academic collaboration. She has contributed to national higher education reforms through her membership of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) National Curriculum Review Committee for Social Work. Her research interests include Gender and Development, Community Development, Population and Demography, Development Economics, Women Studies, Social Policy, Social Welfare, Community Organization, Entrepreneurship, and Socio-economic Development and education policy. Her research has focused on issues such as gender equality, women's empowerment, social protection, health and well-being, poverty reduction, and sustainable community development.
Beyond academia, Dr. Omer is a regular participant in national and international conferences, seminars, and workshops and frequently contributes expert opinions through electronic and print media on contemporary social and development issues. Through her teaching, research, policy engagement, and community outreach, she continues to make significant contributions to the advancement of social work education and research in Pakistan.
