Dr. Allah Bakhsh
Associate Professor
Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology
Ph.D.
Seed Biotechnology Lab Dr. Allah Bakhsh is a renowned researcher who leads the cotton breeding program at CEMB. His primary focus is on utilizing both conventional and non-conventional approaches to develop climate-resilient cotton varieties. With over 100 peer-reviewed research articles published in international and national journals, he has also edited a book titled Potato Production Worldwide. Furthermore, Dr. Allah Bakhsh serves as the editor of SCI-indexed journals such as PLOS ONE, Frontiers in Plant Sciences, Frontiers in Genetics, and the Journal of Cotton Research. He acknowledges the significant impact of transgenic technology on agriculture and has achieved notable success in this realm. Through plant transformation technologies, he has developed insect-resistant cotton varieties that express the cry gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. Dr. Allah Bakhsh’s fascination with exploring alternate sources of insect and disease resistance in crop plants is evident. He is particularly engrossed in RNA interference and genome editing technologies to combat insect pests and diseases effectively. Following the completion of his PhD from the University of Punjab in 2010, Dr. Allah Bakhsh has served at various universities, including the University of Ankara (Turkey), the University of Bologna (Italy), and Nigde Omer Halisdemir University (Turkey) over an 11-year period. Presently, he is spearheading the seed biotechnology laboratories at CEMB alongside Prof. Dr. Abdul Qayyum Rao. Together, they employ modern molecular tools to engineer insect pest and disease resistance traits in crop plants. Dr. Allah Bakhsh’s research interests span a wide spectrum, encompassing the breeding of climate-resilient cotton varieties, the engineering of biotic stress tolerance traits in economically significant crop plants, the development of dsRNA-based biopesticides for improved insect pest management, and the regulatory aspects of GM cotton.
