Dr Ghulam Zahara Jahangir is working as Assistant Professor, Centre for Applied Molecular Biology (CAMB), University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. Previously she has been working as Research Officer at National Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), University of the Punjab and Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) Lahore. Dr Ghulam Zahara Jahangir has qualified her Graduate and later Doctorate degree in Biotechnology from Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), Lahore, Pakistan. She has earned her Postgraduate in Forensic Chemistry from Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), Lahore, Pakistan.
She has been working for the development of local Bio-fertilizers dominated with phosphate and potassium solubilizing characteristics and antifungal capability. Employing siRNA technology, she has genetically modified Sugarcane varieties to develop resistance against Sugarcane Mosaic Virus (SCMV). Also developed superior potato lines (by integrating dehydrin-10 gene of Eucalyptus) possessing higher tolerance for multiple abiotic stresses including drought, salinity and low temperature. She has produced disease free stock of several plant species including Dendrobium, Stevia, Carnation, Gerbera, Banana, Melia, and Mentha. She has published her research findings in various well reputed international journals including Biologia of Plantarum, Biotechnology and Biotechnological Equipment, Journal of Medicinal Plants and Springer.
Dr Ghulam Zahara Jahangir is a part of ‘Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology’ division of CAMB and heading her ‘Green Technology’ research group. 04 Graduate and 03 MPhil students have completed their dissertation under her supervision. Presently students are engaged with research on molecular studies on anti-mutagenic effect of spice plants, elicited production flavonoids in Carica papaya, green synthesis and antimicrobial effect of silver nanoparticles, and plant tissue culture.
