PU ISCS organizes seminar


LAHORE: (Friday, October 14, 2022): In connection with the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, Punjab University Institute of Social & Cultural Studies (ISCS) in collaboration with the Migrant Resource Centre, Pakistan organized a one-day seminar entitled ‘Early Warning for All: Disaster Risk Reduction Strategies in Pakistan’. Director General Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Punjab (PDMA) Faisal Fareed was the chief guest while Director ISCS Prof Dr Rubeena Zakar, Principal Engineer NESPAK Rizwan Maqsood, Nadia Kashif from Migrant Resource Centre, faculty members, students and experts from different walks of life were present on the occasion. The speakers shared their views on the needs and gaps of disaster risk reduction measures in Pakistan. In her address, Prof Dr Rubeena Zakar welcomed the guests and highlighted the significance of emergency disaster preparedness and incorporating the disaster risk reduction strategies at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of health care. She also emphasized the need for gender based health needs during disaster response from the perspective of public health. Rizwan Maqsood shared the effective flood management techniques with the audience and Nadia Kashif sensitized the participants about the issue of disaster induced migration and risks associated with it. Dr Zia ul Haq from Department of Space Science shared his work on early warning system for effective disaster risk reduction. In the end, DG PDMA shared his experiences of effective disaster management. He also highlighted the importance of community level disaster response and active community participation at every phase of disaster management.
