Centre for High Energy Physics

High Energy Physics is the branch of physics that perhaps best represents the themes of fundamental physics, like explaining every observation at the most basic level. The most fundamental explanations it offers are tested in the most advanced experimental collaborations in the world, and Centre for High Energy Physics (CHEP) Punjab University is part of a few of them like BESIII (Beijing Spectrometer III) Collaboration working for exploring physics of electron positron collisions in (2-5) GeV center of mass energy range and also takes part in LINAC (Linear Accelerator) research at IHEP (Institute of High Energy Physics), Beijing, China. In addition to this, right from its beginning in 1982 under the directorship of the present CHEP Professor Emeritus Dr. Muhammad Saleem, CHEP has made significant contribution in the form of theoretical high energy physics.
During the last decade CHEP has become a leading Centre of physics research and education that utilizes a variety of computational skills to train its students till, in case of the selected ones, Ph.D. A major expansion of the Centre was the start of B.S. (4-yr) Computational Physics in 2004 and M. Sc. Computational Physics in 2006. These are physics degrees that, compared to others, better prepare a student in using computers for teaching and research when it is essential or even helpful in achieving a good performance. A visible indication of this aspect of the education at the Centre is four computer laboratories in its three-story building. Each of these labs provides simultaneously a separate computer to as much as 50 students. Teachers use multimedia to demonstrate their use of computers that students can actively follow and implement their understanding on the computer.
Along with this computer-based environment, we do not lack anything in traditional physics education. We have two high tech physics laboratories and an electronics lab to help students learn physics through actual experiments as well. All this, along with a good library, facilitates a very good teaching and learning environment that our dynamic teachers provide. This encourages all of its members to achieve greater heights in personal and educational developments. Discussions in our class rooms, faculty rooms and seminar hall, thousands of books in our library and demonstrations in our computer and hardware labs have resulted in an intellectual community. The result has been that our graduates are working in prestigious institutes both at national and international level.  Many of them are active members of research groups within CHEP itself who are in turn part of international collaborations. The Theoretical High Energy Physics Group at CHEP is collaborating with research groups abroad in 1) Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, Morelia, Michoacán, México, 2) Pittsburgh University, USA, 3) (above mentioned) Beijing Spectrometer III (BES III) Collaboration, Beijing, China, 4) Texas Tech University, Lubbock Texas, USA, 5) Hamburgh University, Germany and 6) Teikyo University, Utsunomiya, Japan.
