LAHORE: (16th October, 2019): Department of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics (MMG), University of the Punjab and American Society for Microbiology have jointly organized one day symposium on “Global Challenges of Antimicrobial Resistance” and Microbial Art Competition. The symposium was based on the discussion about the increasing antibiotic resistance and management strategies. The aim of the competition was to develop interest of students in Microbiology, as culturing bacteria in a way beyond traditional culturing. This activity also helps students to learn about the bacteria and their special properties along with culture media. Such activities also add colors to the life of researchers while working in a closed environment. |
Students from MMG (PU), Center of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB, PU), Department of Zoology, PU, Government College University Faisalabad, Garrison University Lahore, and Shalamar Institute of Health Sciences participated in the competition. Prof. Dr. Shahida Hasnain (National Distinguished Professor, MMG, PU), Dr. Farheen Ansari (Associate Professor, University of the Lahore) and Mr. Habib Alam (College of Art and Design, PU) evaluated the agar plates. Guest of honor Prof. Dr. Firdaus-e-Bareen, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences, PU shed the light on importance of such events. The invited speakers, Prof. Dr. Tahir Naeem (Head of the Department, Shalamar Medical and Dental College Lahore), Dr. Farheen Ansari (Associate Professor, University of the Lahore, Dr. Amina Asif (Assistant Prof. Ameerud din Medical College, General Hospital Lahore), and Ms. Samreen Sarwar (Coordinator Health Security Partner, USA) discussed various aspects of antimicrobial resistance. |
Prof. Dr. Sikander Sultan (Chairman MMG), Prof. Dr. Anjum Nasim Sabri, Mr. Faheem Shahzad (ASM Young Ambassador of Science to Pakistan) and Dr. Saba Riaz (Focal person MMG) concluded the session. Shields were awarded to invited speakers, organizers and winners of the competition. |
