BASIC TERMS AND CONCEPTS

1. Vocabulary


a) Antonyms:

Ø Giving antonym of words/words and making a sentence will the will the new word.

b) Synonyms:

Ø Giving synonym of a word and making a sentence with the new word.

Ø Filling in the blanks selecting right word out of four synonymous words.

c) Homonyms:

Ø Filling in the blanks with a suitable word from out of pair or trios of homonyms.

Ø Contracting sentences to distinguish the meanings of pairs or trios.

d) One-Word Substitution:

Ø Going one word for a statement, a phrase.

Ø Using only word for a phrase in a sentences


2. Practical Grammar

Ø Sentence structure:

a. Functional kinds of a sentence such as Interrogative, Assertive, Imperative etc.

b. Structural kinds of sentences such as simple, compound, complex.

Ø Transformation of sentences: Combining two/three simple/compound sentences in to a single compound as complex sentence.

Ø Parts of Sentence: Pointing out subject, verb, object, predicate complement in a given sentence/sentences.

Ø Rules for structure of sentences: Syntax – rule for arrangement and sequence of words used in a sentence.

Ø Phrases: Definition, types and functions


3. Parts of Speech:

Ø Major words classes such as Noun, Pronoun, Adjective etc.

i. Nouns-with further classifications (regular, countable, uncountable, gender of number and kinds such as proper noun, common noun etc.

ii. Pronouns-with further classifications such as personal pronoun’s Relative Pronouns etc.

iii. Verbs: Kinds of use of three forms of verbs.

iv. Adjectives – with further classifications. The three degrees of comparison and their usage.

v. Adverbs – with further classifications such as adverb of place, time manner etc.

vi. Prepositions – with further classifications.

vii. Confiructions – with further classifications such as simple, compound, co-ordinating, correlative etc.

viii. Interfictions: Definition and usage.

ix. Auxiliary verbs & their usage

x. Determiners: Definitions & usage.

xi. Infinitive form & usage.

xii. Participle: Present participle, past participle & their usage.

xiii. Gerund: Definition of usage.

xiv. Genitives: Definition, types of Fuctions.


4. Tenses:

Ø Types, structure, Function Conversion into negative and Interrogative etc.


5. Active & Passive Voice:

Ø Concept and change of Voice (Active into passive & Passive into Active)


6. Direct & Indirect:

Ø Concept & Change of narration (Direct into Indirect & Indirect into Direct)


7. Articles:

Ø Definitation, Kinds (Definite & Indefinite) & their usage.


8. Composition & Comprehensive

Ø Essay writing

Ø Answering questions on a given passage & making précis of the Passage (giving suitable title)
