THEORY: Antibiotic: Penicillin. Microbial biomass. Biological control. Microbial biotechnology, brewing, antibiotic production, recombinant protein production, vaccine production and waste treatment industries. Scientific disciplines used in microbial biotechnology. Properties of microorganisms useful to the bio-industry. Biochemical Engineering - a historical perspective. Large-scale microbial fermentation, the principles and problems. Bioreacters. Case studies: Industrial alcohol production from sugar cane; Citric acid production. Quorn(r) myco-protein, a product produced by continuous flow fermentation. Isolation and identification of industrially important microorganisms. A spectrum of approaches for microbial strain development. Empirical strain development, mutagenesis and screening. Semi-empirical strain development, selection. The use of auxotroph and analogue resistant mutants in strain development. Continuous culture technologies for strain improvement. Metabolic Control Analysis: principles and means of rational strain development. Case study: Tryptophan biosynthesis in Neurosporacrassa.
