Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), University of the Punjab, Lahore organized a seminar on April, 22, 2024 (Monday) at 10:30 a.m. on “Society and Politics of Jammu and Kashmir.” Dr. Serena Hussain, Associate Professor at the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations, Coventry University, UK was the guest speaker.

The distinguished guest speaker discussed the geography and the ancient history of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir and its people. She presented the history of political movements that set the foundations of the conflict which was unfolded at the time of partition of the Sub-Continent. Dr. Serena said that Kashmir is one of the longest-standing conflicts yet to be resolved by the international community. In 2000, Bill Clinton declared it the most dangerous place in the world and since then the situation continues to escalate. Positioned between India, Pakistan and China – three nuclear powers – Kashmir is the most militarized zone on the planet. Against this backdrop, the urgency to understand what Jammu and Kashmir means to those who actually belong to its territory has increased. She also threw light on the recent developments over the issue of Kashmir and their implications not for the countries involved in this conflict but also for the region. The Guest Speaker discussed the abrogation of Article 370 that has changed the destinies of the people in J&K. She was of the view that this act will have a long lasting impact on this part of the region. Dr. Serena is also the author of book, titled Society and Politics of Jammu and Kashmir. She gave reference of her book which helps readers navigate subtleties in a complex part of the world. Her book is the first of its kind – written for a global audience from local perspectives, which to date have been sorely lacking.
The Director CSAS, Prof, Dr. Naheed S. Goraya thanked the honorable guest speaker and presented her book to Dr. Serena. Many Faculty members, undergrad and post grad students from various disciplines attended this event.
