NitrogenApp

NitrogenApp

NitrogenApp is an Android smartphone application developed by the Department of Soil Science, University of the Punjab, Lahore, under the Punjab Agricultural Research Board (PARB) funded project "Development and Optimization of Android Smartphone Imagery Application for Real-Time Nitrogen Management in Wheat, Rice and Maize Crops" (Project No. 21-140).
The application uses smartphone image analysis, image processing, and artificial intelligence techniques to assess the nitrogen status of crops and provide real-time nitrogen fertilizer recommendations. It enables farmers to optimize nitrogen application in wheat, rice, and maize, thereby improving nitrogen use efficiency, reducing unnecessary fertilizer use, lowering production costs, and minimizing environmental impacts while maintaining crop productivity.
Beyond the original project objectives, NitrogenApp has been further enhanced by incorporating modules for nitrogen management during crop residue (stubble) decomposition in rice, wheat, maize, cotton, and sugarcane. Research is also underway to expand the application by including additional crops, making it a comprehensive digital platform for precision nutrient management.
The application is freely available on the Google Play Store and serves as an important step towards the digital transformation of agriculture in Pakistan by providing farmers, researchers, students, and extension personnel with an easy-to-use, science-based decision support tool for sustainable nitrogen management.
