PU organizes awareness seminar on plastic


LAHORE: (Wednesday, November 29, 2023): Punjab University Department of Food Sciences Clean Green Champions Team in collaboration with PepsiCo organized an awareness seminar and cleaning activity regarding plastic based materials. On this occasion, Chairman Department of Food Sciences Dr Shinawar Waseem Ali, QC Lead PepsiCo Muhammad Shahzad Ahmad, Production Team Lead, PepsiCo Mr. Khalil ur Rehman, faculty members and students were present. In his address, Dr Shinawar said most of the plastic pollution is generated from the packaging materials of food items and it is certainly a complex issue to tackle with, so, there is dire need to train the society and students in this regard, rather than merely educate. He said that plastic have been part of daily life due to their versatility, durability and low cost, however, in developing countries like Pakistan, it has been a major pollutant, that not only affect the environment, eco-system, animal and marine life, but also is a major cause of deadly diseases in human being. He said that unfortunately Pakistan is among the Top 10 countries in Plastic pollution where 90% of plastic waste is disposed of improperly. Shahzad Ahmad said that Clean Green Champions is one of the active teams working for pep+ targets and is here in PU for cleaning activity and to motivate the students to be an activist against plastic pollution. He said that we are taking impactful steps to provide a better future to the world by driving sustainability through pep+ Agenda. Khalil ur Rehman explained how by carrying positive agriculture, value chain and choices PepsiCo is strengthening the idea of a sustainable planet. The students with Shazra Tamoor and Muhammad Shahid from PepsiCo collected plastic waste on roads and footpaths in the University. Later, Usman Haider from PepsiCo distributed certificates among the participants.
