LAHORE: (Wednesday, September 2, 2026): U.S. Consul General Stetson A. Sanders joined academic leaders and senior journalists at the University of the Punjab on Wednesday to mark the conclusion of “Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era: Strengthening Responsible Content Creation in Open Digital Spaces,” a project supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN). The closing ceremony, held at PU CEMB Auditorium on the Quaid-e-Azam Campus, brought together senior journalists, media analysts, academic leaders, and representatives of the U.S. Consulate General Lahore. Consul General Sanders attended as Chief Guest. Speaking at the ceremony, Consul General Sanders said, “This project reflects the very best of what the U.S.-Pakistan partnership can achieve: shared expertise, mutual respect, and a common commitment to open, trustworthy, and free digital spaces.” PU VC Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali, spoke to the responsibility of academic institutions in preparing students for emerging digital challenges. Delivered through the Department of Media and Development Communication, the project trained emerging media professionals in ethical storytelling, verification practice, and artificial intelligence literacy. Project Lead Dr. Ayesha Ashfaq, Chairperson of the Department, presented an overview of the initiative’s outcomes, highlighting its contribution to responsible digital communication among the next generation of Pakistani journalists. A central output of the project is a newly developed AI Toolkit supporting ethical content creation and verification, introduced at the ceremony by media development practitioner and project team member Fazli Hadi. Senior journalist and digital media expert Mehmal Sarfraz addressed the evolving challenges of digital trust and the journalist’s role in building credible narratives in AI-driven environments. Muneeb Farooq, senior journalist, set out a forward-looking roadmap for young journalists working in open digital spaces. The ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates to participants and project team members in recognition of their engagement throughout the initiative. The project forms part of the U.S. Mission to Pakistan’s continuing support for media literacy, responsible content creation, and digital trust in Pakistan’s evolving information landscape.
