LAHORE: (Saturday, August 15, 2026): Under the patronage of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the Punjab University College of Art & Design (PUCAD) and the National College of Arts (NCA) have jointly organized a landmark art exhibition for the first time, titled “Ranai-e-Khayal-o-Khat” (The Beauty of Thought and Line), bringing together the creative work of faculty members and alumni of the two historic institutions on a common platform. The exhibition represents a significant milestone in academic and artistic collaboration between PU and NCA, two of Pakistan’s most prominent institutions in the field of art and design. Chairman Higher Education Commission Pakistan Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar, PU VC Prof Dr Muhammad Ali, NCA VC Prof Dr Murtaza Jaffar, Principal PUCAD Prof Dr Samina Nasim, faculty members, students, alumni and prominent personalities associated with the field of fine arts attended the inaugural ceremony. Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar inaugurated the exhibition at the College of Art & Design. The exhibition was jointly organized under the leadership of Vice Chancellor NCA Prof Dr Murtaza Jaffar and Principal Punjab University College of Art & Design Prof Dr Samina Nasim. More than 300 paintings, sculptures and other works of art created by faculty members and alumni of PU College of Art & Design and NCA have been displayed at exhibition venues at both institutions. The exhibition provides a unique opportunity for artists associated with the two institutions to present their creative expressions, artistic experiments and individual perspectives to a wider audience. The displayed works cover a broad range of subjects, styles and techniques, reflecting different dimensions of contemporary artistic practice as well as the rich artistic traditions of Pakistan. The exhibition was particularly significant because it brought together two historic art institutions for a collaborative initiative of this scale for the first time. The initiative is being viewed as a new beginning for greater academic, creative and institutional cooperation between the two institutions. Visitors toured the exhibition at both venues and appreciated the diversity and quality of the artworks. Addressing the gathering, HEC Chairman Prof Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar said that it had long been his desire to see NCA and the College of Art & Design move forward through greater collaboration. “I am very happy to see this exhibition today, organized through the collaboration of the two institutions,” he said. Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar said artists possess a unique ability to portray society and its various dimensions in a powerful and meaningful manner. He emphasized that the work of Pakistani artists should be promoted not only within the country but also at the international level so that the world could recognize the creative potential of Pakistani talent. He said the exhibition was a positive example of how academic institutions could work together to promote creativity, innovation and artistic expression. He added that good work should be encouraged and appreciated, and such initiatives could help create greater opportunities for young artists and graduates. He highlighted the academic and professional achievements of Pakistani youth at international institutions. Speaking about the capabilities of Pakistani students and graduates, he said Pakistani students constitute a significant share of recipients of European Union scholarships and are succeeding in securing scholarships after facing tough competition. He said those assessing the quality of Pakistani graduates should also recognize that international scholarship opportunities being secured by Pakistani students were an acknowledgment of their academic capabilities and potential. He further stated that the United States had recently invited 1,450 Pakistani doctors to work there, which, he said, was a reflection of the quality and professional competence of Pakistani graduates. Highlighting the potential of young Pakistanis in emerging fields, he said Pakistani youth had demonstrated considerable creative capabilities in Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, Computer Science and other digital fields. He said Pakistan was aiming to earn $5.6 billion in remittances through the digital economy this year, adding that the country’s young professionals could play a key role in achieving this target. He said graduates of Pakistani universities were pursuing higher education and teaching at some of the world’s leading universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). According to him, the presence of Pakistani graduates at leading international institutions was evidence of the quality of education being provided by the country’s universities. “Our talent is second to none,” he remarked. Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar said good work should be encouraged and appreciated, adding that the HEC would soon organize an exhibition showcasing products, innovations and creative works developed by universities across the country. He highly appreciated the artworks displayed at the exhibition and praised the artists for their creativity, artistic expression and contribution to the promotion of fine arts.
VC Prof Dr Muhammad Ali said the joint exhibition marked the first time that PU College of Art & Design and the National College of Arts had come together to organize an exhibition of such significance. He said the most remarkable aspect of the exhibition was that two leading educational and artistic institutions had joined hands for a project of this nature. He described the initiative as a promising beginning of a new partnership that could lead to greater cooperation in the areas of education, research, art, design and creative industries. He said universities should provide students and artists with platforms where they could express their ideas, experiment with new forms and interact with wider artistic communities. He said collaborative initiatives such as the exhibition could contribute to developing stronger links between academic institutions and the creative sector. NCA VC Prof Dr Murtaza Jaffar said “Ranai-e-Khayal-o-Khat” was an important step toward strengthening academic, creative and artistic relations between NCA and PU. He said the exhibition provided an opportunity to bring the creative work of alumni and faculty members of the two institutions together on a common platform. Such initiatives, he added, were essential for promoting the arts and encouraging dialogue among artists, students, academics and the wider public.
Principal PU College of Art & Design Prof Dr Samina Nasim said the exhibition was an important milestone for both institutions and would contribute to strengthening mutual understanding and academic cooperation in the field of art and design. She said the exhibition had provided faculty members and alumni of both institutions an opportunity to showcase their creative work, interact with fellow artists and present diverse approaches to artistic expression. While the nation marks Independence Day with patriotic enthusiasm, the artist community has expressed the spirit of freedom, identity and national pride through colors, lines, forms and innovative ideas. The artworks on display represent both contemporary and traditional approaches to art. Several works explore themes of freedom, nature, identity, society and human emotions, allowing visitors to experience different perspectives through visual expression. Landscape paintings displayed at the exhibition beautifully depict the natural beauty of Pakistan through vibrant colors and expressive compositions. Through representations of fields, landscapes and natural surroundings, artists have paid tribute to the country’s diverse environment and scenic beauty. One of the artworks that attracted considerable attention from visitors featured birds and fruits placed within a beautiful natural setting. The composition symbolizes freedom, blessings and the abundance of life, while the carefully selected colors make the work particularly striking. Figurative art also formed an important part of the exhibition. Through human figures, composition, line and form, artists explored human emotions and different aspects of social life. Some works appear to narrate stories through their use of color, structure and visual symbolism. Abstract artworks offered another dimension to the exhibition. Through the interplay of line, color and form, artists expressed ideas and emotions without relying on conventional representation.
