Speakers call for making digital world a safer place for women


LAHORE: (Thursday, April 11, 2019): Punjab University Institute of Social and Cultural Studies Director Prof Dr Rubeena Zakar has said that efforts should be made to make the digital world a safer place where females don’t feel threatened. She was addressing a seminar on cyber harassment against women at ISCS auditorium in accordance with resolution number 101/19 of Provincial Assembly of Punjab. Guest speakers Ms Zaina Durrani and Ms Shumaila Khan from Digital Rights Foundation, faculty members and a large number of students participated in the seminar. Addressing the seminar, Prof. Dr. Rubeena Zakar explained that women were more likely to be victims of cyber harassment. She said that awareness must be created among the women regarding protection of their digital privacy. She said that women must be aware of the tactics through which their personal data could reach out to the unwanted hands. She said that women must not fear any such harassment as the government had introduced and implemented strict laws regarding cyber crimes and major penalties were being imposed on cyber criminals. She said that the seminar was also aimed at sensitizing the youth and enhancing their understanding on the important issue. The guest speakers Ms. Zainab Durrani and Ms. Shumaila Khan explained various forms of on-line harassment that women were facing. The speakers also informed students about the salient features of Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 of Pakistan.
