LAHORE: (Thursday, October 15, 2026): Punjab Minister Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar has said that in the digital age, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain sustained attention on a single subject or activity while using screens, whereas books provide an opportunity for focused, in-depth and continuous reading. He said that distancing the younger generation from books could create problems for them; therefore, encouraging young people to read and reconnecting them with books is the need of the hour.
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of Pakistan’s largest three-day book fair, organized by Punjab University here on Thursday. PU VC Prof Dr. Muhammad Ali, Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr. Mahmood Saleem, faculty members, administrative officials and a large number of students attended the ceremony.
The provincial minister visited various stalls at the book fair, expressed interest in the books and other items on display, and purchased books on different subjects. Speaking on the occasion, Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar said he was delighted to witness the impressive organization of the book fair at PU. He said the large number of students attending the fair and their keen interest in books were encouraging signs. Such activities play an important role in cultivating a love of reading among young people and promoting knowledge and research. He observed that while modern technology and AI offer numerous benefits, their use also presents certain challenges. He expressed hope that book fairs and similar positive educational activities would help address the challenges of the digital age and strengthen the intellectual and academic capabilities of young people. Appreciating the stalls showcasing student startups and innovative ideas, the provincial minister said universities must promote creative thinking, innovation, entrepreneurial abilities and practical skills alongside formal education. He added that students’ efforts to turn their ideas into reality were encouraging and that such opportunities provide a platform for young people to showcase their talents. Briefing the provincial minister, Prof Dr. Muhammad Ali said the three-day book fair would continue from October 15 to 17 in the corridor of Faisal Auditorium at the PU’s New Campus. He said more than 114 stalls had been set up at the fair, featuring books on a wide range of subjects from renowned publishers across the country. Books were being offered at discounted prices to ensure easy access to quality publications for students, teachers and other readers. He added that special stalls had been introduced this year to highlight students’ innovative ideas and creative abilities. These initiatives broaden the scope of the event beyond the buying and selling of books and help promote innovation and entrepreneurship among young people. He stated that approximately 175,000 books had been sold at last year’s PU book fair, reflecting the strong interest of students and general readers in books. A large turnout of citizens, students and people associated with literature and education was also expected this year. The three-day book fair will remain open from October 15 to 17, from 9am to 8pm, providing visitors with opportunities to explore and purchase books on various subjects and participate in academic and literary activities.
