LAHORE: (Thursday, January 24, 2013): “The teaching the subject of Pakistan studies should be aimed at developing patriotism in young generation and helping them understand why Pakistan was created and what role is expected from them to strengthen their motherland.” These were the recommendations in “Workshop for Teachers of Pakistan Studies” organized by Pakistan Study Centre. Dean, Faculty of Behavioral and Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Zakria Zakir presided over the inaugural session of the workshop. The recommendations of the workshop included that the syllabi of Pakistan studies should be revisited with a view to make it interesting for the students as well as more relevant to present day Pakistan. Director PSC Prof. Dr. Massarrat Abid, Deputy Secretary Higher Education Department, Government of the Punjab Tariq Hameed Bhatti, Prof. Ali Abbas, Dr. Safdar Sherazi, Prof. Dr. Farooq Hasnat, Prof. Dr. Irshad Ahmad Farrukh, Dr. Azmat Hayat, Dr. Ahmad Ejaz and Mr. Amjad Abbas Magsi were the speakers while more than fifty colleges affiliated with Punjab University nominated teachers of Pakistan studies to attend the workshop. Prof Dr Massarrat Abid thanked PU VC Prof. Dr. Mujahid Kamran for supporting the idea and providing financial support. She also acknowledged the support of Higher Education Department for organizing the workshop. In her welcome speech, Dr Massarrat Abid elaborated the broader objectives of the workshop which aimed at revisiting the syllabi of the discipline, making recommendations to meet the challenges of today, providing an opportunity of interaction between college teachers of subject of Pakistan studies and facilitate and discussing authentic published sources with respective teachers. Nine special lectures on the course contents were arranged in the workshop, which were spread over three sessions. The lectures focused on the ideology of Pakistan, the creation of Pakistan, natural resources of Pakistan and institutional structure of Pakistan, methods and techniques to teach Pakistan studies and Pakistan and the Muslim world. A book exhibition by Oxford University Press Pakistan was also held at the Centre.
