PU VC demands Sharifs revive Pahalwani

LAHORE: (Monday, May 13, 2013): Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has requested PML-N Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif to revive traditional sport of (Pahalwani) Desi wrestling in the province. He was talking to media at the inaugural ceremony of Akharra (wrestling arena) at New Campus hostels ground here on Monday. Director Sports Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar, Pride of Pakistan Haji Muhammad Afzal, Haji Sirajuddin Muhammad Saeed, Chaudhry Liaqat, Lala Pahalwan, senior faculty members and wrestlers were present on the occasion.
 
Dr Mujahid Kamran said that Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif understood the importance of the traditional sport and expressed the hope that they would make efforts to promote it. He said that the game was mark of our glory in the past but unfortunately it was being badly ignored. He appreciated Director Sports Prof Dr Mansoor Sarwar for giving special attention to the traditional sports at Punjab University. In his inaugural address, Dr Mansoor Sarwar stressed the need to revive desi kushti and said that the PU's initiative would set a tradition. He said that the credit of inauguration of wrestling arena went to Dr Mujahid Kamran who was supporting all kinds of sports in Punjab University. Later, wrestling competitions were also held and guests were dressed with traditional Pugs (turbans).
