Lahore, December 11, 2025: The Centre for Integrated Mountain Research (CIMR), University of the Punjab, New Campus Lahore, celebrated International Mountain Day 2025 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Saima Siddiqui (Director CIMR) by organizing a seminar aligned with the global theme “Glaciers Matter for Water, Food and Livelihoods in Mountains and Beyond.” On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Saima Siddiqui (Director, CIMR), Engr. Dr. Muhammad Yaseen (Assistant Professor, CIMR), Dr. Syed Umair Shahid (Assistant Professor, CIMR), and Ms. Bushra Zia Khan (Lecturer, CIMR) welcomed the keynote speakers and shed light on the importance of the day.

The seminar featured two distinguished keynote speakers who delivered thought-provoking presentations:
Dr. Muhammad Ghous, Chairman, Department of Geography, Government College of Science, Wahdat Road Lahore, addressed the audience on the alarming rate of glacier retreat and its implications for freshwater availability. He emphasized that glacier-fed basins are critical for Pakistan’s water security and stressed the importance of robust climate monitoring, watershed management, and community engagement to combat the effects of climate change.
Dr. Muhammad Jabbar, Assistant Professor of Geography, Government Islamia College Civil Lines Lahore, discussed the indispensable role of glaciers in supporting food production, energy generation, and local livelihoods. He highlighted that millions of people—both in mountain regions and downstream areas depend on glacial meltwater for agriculture, drinking water, and hydropower.
