PU celebrates World Mother Tongue Day


LAHORE: (Tuesday, February 21, 2012): Punjab University Punjabi Adabi Majlis, Department of Punjabi, on Tuesday celebrated World Mother Tongue day and organized a ceremony “Jagat Maa Boli Dehar” at Sherani Hall, Old Campus.

Dean Prof Dr Hafiz Mahmood Akhtar, Principal Oriental College Prof Dr Mazhar Moeen, Punjabi Department Chairman Prof Dr Asmatullah Zahid, Dr Anjum Rehmani, Dr Naheed Shahid, renowned journalist Mudassar Iqbal Butt, faculty members and a large number of students participated on the occasion. Addressing the ceremony, Prof Dr Asmat Ullah Zahid said Punjabi language is not being spoken only on this region rather in some Canadian cities it is considered 2nd language.

He said the purpose of celebrate World Mother Tongue Day was to answer the question that why there was complex in new generation to speak Punjabi language? HE said that Punjabi was a dynamic language and all sorts of literature was avail in Punjabi which spoke the volume of its richness. Dr Anjum Rehmani read his research paper on the occasion. Speakers of the seminar, including Dr Akhtar, Dr Moeen, Nabeela Rehman, Dr Shahid and Mr Butt, stressed the need that the mother tongue should be loved like mother. They said that there was a need to reduce dangers faced by Punjab language. They urged the government to take steps to support Punjabi language at official level for its promotion.
