CSAS Holds Seminar on 'The Empowered South Asian Mind: From Emotional Burden to Emotional Capital'

The Centre for South Asian Studies (CSAS), University of the Punjab, Lahore organized a one day Seminar on September 29, 2025. Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Awan, Advocate Lahore High Court was the Guest Speaker at the occasion. He delivered talk on “The Empowered South Asian Mind: From Emotional Burden to Emotional Capital”. Dr. Abdullah highlighted the value of the art of converting emotional burden to emotional strengths. He reiterated that even by living so close to each other, yet people feel isolated in South Asia. He further explained the social stigma that is associated with mental health issues in South Asian society. After explaining the concepts of emotional burden and emotional capital, he briefed the audience about five layers of burden in South Asia including family pressures, economic strain, social comparison, trauma legacy, and mental health stigma. The Guest Speaker mentioned that around 70 % families in South Asia avoid mental health treatment because of the stigma attached with it. He presented three steps framework to convert emotional burden to emotional capital, which are Awareness, Conversion, and Capitalization. In the end, a Proformas were distributed to gauge the emotional capital of the participants. Dr. Abdullah ended the seminar by stressing that No one likes your weaker versions, and nobody loves you at your lows which reiterates the value of converting emotional stress to emotional strength.
