Department of Horticulture Hosted an Invited Lecture on Longevity and Plant Science Applications

LAHORE (May 14, 2026): The Department of Horticulture at the University of the Punjab organized a high-profile invited lecture, bridging advanced computational biology with modern agricultural sciences. The seminar was organized by Assistant Professor Malik Fiaz Hussain Ferdosi as part of an ongoing departmental initiative to bring eminent field experts directly into the classroom and expose students to real-world scientific breakthroughs.
The guest speaker, Dr. Safiullah Chaudhary, Associate Professor and Director of the Bio-Computing/Bioinformatics Engineering Research Laboratory at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), LUMS, delivered a compelling presentation titled "Vitae: Aging and Longevity Research."
While centered on cellular biology, the lecture sparked a highly productive academic discussion on how the core principles of cellular aging, oxidative stress, and longevity can be directly applied to horticultural science. Faculty and students explored how these computational insights could help model cellular degradation in plants, delay post-harvest fruit ripening, and extend the commercial shelf-life of major fruit crops. To ensure a lasting academic impact, these cutting-edge multidisciplinary concepts will be actively integrated into upcoming student assignments, case studies, and examinations.
