PU launches U.S. supported project on digital trust and responsible AI use in journalism

LAHORE: (Tuesday, July 07, 2026): Punjab University Department of Media and Development Communication inaugurated the project "Digital Trust and Free Expression in the AI Era: Strengthening Responsible Content Creation in Open Digital Spaces," supported by the U.S. Mission to Pakistan in partnership with the Pakistan-U.S. Alumni Network (PUAN). Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali, Vice Chancellor of the University of the Punjab, underscored the pivotal role of universities in shaping responsible digital communicators. "In an era where truth competes with technology, universities must stand as anchors of integrity and intellectual discipline," he said, adding that "AI may accelerate information, but only human judgment can ensure its accuracy." He further noted that while AI can process vast amounts of data, it cannot replace human intuition, empathy, and emotional understanding — qualities he described as essential for ethical journalism and credible storytelling. Project Lead Dr. Ayesha Ashfaq highlighted the growing challenges posed by AI-generated content, synthetic media, and deepfakes, stressing the urgent need for stronger verification skills and responsible AI use among journalists and digital content creators. Senior journalist Mr. Sohail Warraich emphasized the need to reclaim journalism’s authority in an era of fragmented information flows, arguing that truth, transparency, and strong editorial judgment are essential to rebuilding public trust in digital spaces. Senior Anchor and Digital Media Consultant Mr. Ajmal Jami addressed the transformation of newsrooms in the AI era, highlighting how algorithmic systems increasingly shape content visibility and audience engagement, and underscoring the importance of journalists understanding and adapting to AI-driven media dynamics. Media Development Practitioner at Shirkat Gah Mr. Fazli Hadi presented an overview of Pakistan's digital information landscape, identifying emerging trends, capacity gaps, and the urgent need for stronger verification and fact-checking skills across the media sector. The ceremony was attended by faculty members Dr. Shazia Ismail Toor and Dr. Madiha Maqsood, and representatives from the U.S. Consulate General Lahore. The initiative aims to equip early-career journalists, media students, and digital creators with practical skills in verification, ethical storytelling, and responsible AI use — strengthening audience trust in Pakistan's rapidly evolving digital environment.
