PU to academic programs in fisheries


LAHORE: (Wednesday, December 11, 2024): Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali has directed to launch academic programs in fisheries and aquaculture as there is a severe dearth of human resource in both fields besides excellent entrepreneurial opportunities. He was addressing a conference organized by the Institute of Zoology on ‘World Fisheries Day’ at PU Fish Research Farm. On this occasion, DG Punjab Agriculture Food and Drug Authority Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, former Vice Chancellor Baltistan University Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, Director Institute of Zoology Dr Nabila Roohi, In-charge Fish Research Farm Prof Dr Noor Khan, experts, industry representatives, teachers from various universities and a large number of students were present.

In his address, Dr Muhammad Ali said that PU will play an effective role in promoting fisheries and aquaculture industry. He said that fish is the best source of protein and many food products can be made from it. He said that after acquiring knowledge and skills, female students must work in the practical field. He said that students must be aware of environmental and global changes. He appreciated the ideas of students at food stalls and poster competitions. Dr Noor Khan said that aquatic life is facing environmental threats. He said that various research projects have been launched with the support of Punjab Agriculture Research Board, AMG-ThaiUnion and other organizations. He said that all universities of Pakistan should promote research in fisheries. He said that there are very few technical experts for projects in the field of fisheries. He said that maximum degree holders in fisheries and aquaculture are employed in services and industry sectors. On this occasion, various types of posters and fish food stalls were set up by the students, among which fish donuts, fish cakes, fish halwa, fish rasmalai, fish muffins, fish pasta and fish roti are worth mentioning. Earlier, an awareness walk was taken out regarding Fisheries Day under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Ali. Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, Dr Nabila Roohi and others also addressed the ceremony.
