National Workshop on Honeybee at PU


LAHORE: (Tuesday, March 20, 2012): Punjab University Department of Zoology organized 8th National Beekeeping Training Workshop which was attended by both private and public sector including the department of Agriculture, Forest, Livestock, Education, Military Farms and Vocational Training Organizations etc.

The aim of the workshop was to create employment and improve livelihoods through knowledge partnerships. The training workshop would provide and excellent orientation for beekeeping as a hobby and profitable enterprise for honey production for the landless, those with small – holding and poor farm communities as well as help in the diversification of farm production system through cross-pollination resulting in enhanced crop productivity. It is worth mentioning that in developed countries, honeybee colonies are rented by the fruit/crop growers for pollination purpose for diversification of farm production system. Contrary to that, honeybee farmers in our country are facing serous difficulty in temporary placement of honeybee colonies near crop or orchard fields or forests.

Major objective of participation of the multidisciplinary personnel was to help sensitize them about beekeeping and its benefits so as to develop awareness among then to solve problems of the beekeepers during migration of honeybee colonies on different floral belts in various localities.
