Special Lecture on PhD thesis writing

LAHORE: (Friday, February 24, 2012): Pakistan Study Centre University of the Punjab organized lecture on writing of PhD dissertation here on Friday. Prof Dr Bettina Robotka from Institute of Asian and African Studies, Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany was the speaker. Dr Bettina Robotka said that while writing a PhD thesis, students must access to source material including documents and other material such as paintings and monuments etc. Depending on available writer construct story about the specific period. She said writing about one period/event is a continuing process which never ends and it can not be covered totally by one writer. She added that some times it happens that after completing the study, writer himself feels about deficiencies and loop holes in it. She said that history is invented again and again and many times new questions arise. Talking about a teacher, she said that teacher must be a fountain of knowledge and he/she should be able to convey information to students. Guiding the PhD students she advised that the PhD student must have understanding of title of their study while they go to choose it. She stated they should try to add rich material that must be valid for the awareness of public. She said that while writing thesis, students must be updated to that level where he/she should be able to convey information to global community. Dr. Robotka said that every student must be a critic; and he should not take things as it appears. Material must be gone through analytical study by them. She also said that academic controversy is not bad while it is good if it is not taken personally. Prof. Dr. Massarrat Abid, Director of the Centre conducted the proceedings and introduced the speaker. A question-answer session was held after the lecture. The lecture was attended by faculty members, PhD and M. Phil. researchers of the Centre and History departments.
