PU PSC organizes academic workshop

LAHORE: (Tuesday, May 12, 2026): Punjab University Pakistan Study Centre in collaboration with the American Institute of Pakistan Studies, Islamabad, organized an academic workshop on ‘Pakistan Studies in the 21st Century: Teaching, Narratives, and Perspectives’. On this occasion, Director Pakistan Study Centre Prof. Dr. Amjad Abbas Magsi, Country Director, American Institute of Pakistan Studies, Islamabad Dr. Aalia Sohail Khan, Dean of Social Sciences FCCU Prof Dr. Skindar Hayat, Prof. Emeritus of Political Science, PU Dr. Hasan Askari Rizvi, research scholars, faculty members and students were present. In his address, Prof. Dr. Amjad Abbas Magsi said that the workshop brought together leading scholars, researchers, faculty members, to deliberate upon emerging trends, contemporary challenges, and interdisciplinary approaches in the field of Pakistan studies. He said that the event aimed to encourage critical engagement with questions of national identity, historical narratives, cultural perspectives, pedagogy, and Pakistan’s evolving global position. He also emphasized the need to revisit Pakistan Studies through innovative academic methodologies and interdisciplinary dialogue in order to make the discipline more relevant to contemporary realities. Dr. Aalia Sohail Khan appreciated the collaborative efforts of the Pakistan Study Centre and underscored the importance of academic partnerships, research engagement and scholarly exchange in strengthening Pakistan Studies at both national and international levels. Prof. Sikandar Hayat, shed light on “Origins and Development of Pakistan Studies in Pakistan,” presenting a historical overview of the discipline and its institutional evolution. He called for a policy-oriented approach to research on contemporary issues: urbanization, internal migration, changing demographics, youth in national development, mental health, social media’s role in public discourse, and digital transformation. He underscored the need for interdisciplinary academic collaboration at national and international levels. In his view Pakistan Studies should focus on developing collaboration with policymakers, revitalizing the Curriculum and faculty development. Prof. Dr. Hassan Askari Rizvi delivered a comprehensive talk on contemporary issues in Pakistan studies, where he analyzed emerging political, social, governance, and international challenges confronting Pakistan in the 21st century. He encouraged quality research by producing thematic analytical studies, regional histories alongwith citizenship. He said that the contents of the curriculum of Pakistan Studies should focus more on the post-independence period i.e. contemporary Pakistan. He also spoke about developing a research spread system to attract foreign researchers.
