National Youth Conference on Youth and Leadership in Pakistan


Institute of Administrative Sciences (IAS) in collaboration of FCG Human Capital Pvt. Ltd. organized a National Conference on Youth and Leadership in Pakistan on April 25th, 2013. The session started with recitation of the Holy Quran. Director IAS, Prof. Dr. NasiraJabeen said in her key note address that today, freedom and security of our nation depends on the quality of Pakistani leadership. Without the right leadership our country cannot become a peaceful, secure and dignified place to live in. She said that our country is making a new beginning on May 11 th , 2013 and identified the key roles and responsibilities of youth, women and men, media, civil society and public officials in this direction.
 
 
Through the forum, the institute aimed to steer youth for their role in coming elections. Focus was on making an informed educated decision while casting one's vote. A presentation on Youth Factors was made by Mr.ShahzadBukhari (COO FCG Human Capital Pvt. Ltd.). In his presentation, Mr. Shahzad shared some statistics of the populationthat is eligible to cast their vote and the actual scenarios from the past elections held in Pakistan. Role of Youth was discussed by Mr. UbaidUllahChaudhry (Director, Citizen Voice Project, The Asia Foundation, USAID).He particularly focused on the declining trend of women participation in vote casting. He also talked about the role that youth has to play after they have casted their vote. The interaction and follow up with our political leaders, for the duties they are entitled to do,is basically our real responsibility as a nation.A video with the message to educate audience on importance of casting one's vote towards achieving a better Pakistanspecially produced by computer sciences graduates from FAST University, Islamabad was shared with audience.
 
 
A Panel discussion on the conference agenda was also conducted. Panelists included; Mr. Syed SaqibMuhayyudin – CEO SME BSF, Ministry of Finance, Mr. SharjeelAhmad Khan– Program Manager-South Asia Partnership, and Ms. YasminZaki - CEO of Child Care Foundation of Pakistan. Mr. Muhayyudin talked to the audience giving the examples of China and Bangladesh as a nation and how they have progressed in a span of few years. Ms. YasminZaki said that the leadership starts from within oneself. She shared her personal experiences of role models she has met and worked with over the period of time. The purpose behind all this sharing was to make the audience aware about what leadership actually is so that they may make a wiser decision while electing the political parties. Mr. Sharjeel Ahmad briefly highlighted the historical background of political parties and the scenario that Pakistan has gone through over the years. All the panelists stressed on the fact that while casting one's vote, we should understand that we are not electing one individual, we are electing a party. Therefore, it is important to understand the ideology of any political party rather than being carried away with the personality of one candidate representing the party.
 
 
Panel discussion was followed by question and answer session. Implementation of policies by the political powers and its consequent effects on the economy and development of Pakistan were critically analyzed. Conference was attended by a large number of students, faculty, IAS alumni and staff members.A closing note of the conference was presented by Mr. ShahzadBukhari. Towards the end, Prof. Dr. NasiraJabeen - Director IAS presented bouquets and souvenirs to the guest speakers and panelists. Conference was convened by Ms. SameenZaki –Manager Placements & Career Guidance, Mr. Adnan Hussain – Research Scholar, Ms. RifatUmbreenAfzal – Asst. Reg. Admin, Mr. Muhammad Saqlain – IT Administrator, Ms. ImanSaleem – Research Scholar and Mr. Ahsan Bilal – Teacher Assistant.
 
 
To sum up, the message of the session that should be remembered is to have the ownership of our country because this is the spirit that helps individuals to contribute in the nation building process.
