Institute of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics (IMMG) in collaboration with American Society for Microbiology (ASM), organized one day workshop on Agar Art


LAHORE: (5th October, 2023): The Institute of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics (MMG), University of the Punjab and American Society for Microbiology have jointly organized one day workshop on Agar Art Contest 2023. The main aim of this one day workshop was to provide a platform to microbiology students to express their creativity using microbes. This activity also helps students to learn about the bacteria and their special properties along with culture media. Such activities also add colors to the life of researchers while working in a closed environment. The central theme of this Agar Art workshop and contest was "Microbiology in Space” signifying how micro-organisms thrive in outer space. The workshop was organized under the patronage and supervision of the Director Institute of MMG, Prof. Dr. Anjum Nasim Sabri. At the start of the event, Dr. Imran Sajid, Faculty Advisor of the ASM International Students Chapter, University of the Punjab, presented the chapter's achievements, ASM's introduction and mission and facilitation in the event. Dr. Mehboob Ahmed discussed the historical context and evolution of agar culture media, while Dr. Saba Riaz added an artistic touch with a poetic tribute to microbiology, enriching the scientific gathering. It is worth mentioning that the participants from various institutions in Lahore, including; University of the Punjab, University of Central Punjab (UCP), University of Management and Technology (UMT), University of Vetrinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), and Gulab Devi Educational Complex, Lahore, showcased their artwork. Prof. Emeritus Dr. Shahida Hasnain, Prof. Dr. Sikandar Sultan and Prof. Dr. Abdul Rehman served as esteemed judges, evaluating the student artworks based on both artistic and scientific criteria. Dr. Imran Sajid, announced the names of the winners, commended their efforts, and expressed gratitude to the students for their active participation in the event. Among the winners were; Mehwish, Sana Husain, Zainab Ijaz, 1st Position (Institute of MMG, university of the Punjab), Warda Attique, Saiqa Sattar, Amina Mehmood, Laiba Arshad, tehreem Irfan, Ammara Khalid, Ifrah Amjad, fazal Rahim 2nd position (Institute of MMG, University of the Punjab), Syeda Noor Fatima, 3rd Position, University of Central Punjab (UCP), Mutther Aslam 3rd Position, University of Management and Technology (UMT).The winners of this institutional competition will submit their artwork in the ASM Agar Art Contest, 2023 being organized by the American Society for Microbiology at the global level.
